Lula May Thomas was born on October 11, 1882, in Gordonsville, Virginia, her father, Napolean, was 38, and her mother, Julia Wallace Thomas , was 32.

She married Carlos James Craft on October 11, 1900, in the District of Columbia. They had four children; Edna Elizabeth, Carl James, Wallace Hamilton and William ‘Beans’ Thomas.
After her husband, Carlos, died in an automobile accident in 1914, she ran a boarding house to support herself and her four children. When he returned from WWI her brother John Thomas moved and and helped.
