Where was Culbertson, Ohio?

Another Mystery for history sleuths: Have an idea?  Post a comment!

Many of the letters and postcard list Wilson and Mattie’s address as Culbertson, Ohio.  We know it must have been near the DT&I Railway in the general area of Pedro, but it’s not on any modern maps.

The Road Side Thoughts Gazetteer says this about Culbertson:

Welcome to Culbertson …

Although we found mention of Culbertson during our research, we have little information about it.<1> Given the context of how Culbertson was mentioned, we believe that it was a community rather than a locale or some type of landmark. We have done a cursory search and if it was a community, we haven’t been able to find any evidence that it still exists..

While we are confident that Culbertson was located in Lawrence County, we don’t know its actual location within the county.

We’ve added Culbertson to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Culbertson – knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc.

The earliest mention that we’ve found of Culbertson was in the Business Atlas and Shippers’ Guide dated 1895 (see the ‘Miscellaneous References’ section below).
