Daniel Boone of Nellis

Uncle Don and a couple of his buddies went over the mountain from Nellis to Fork Creek to get a few Christmas trees, one for the school. Snow was on the ground and a bigger storm descended on Santa’s helpers. Very cold and tired they became disoriented and trudged through deep snows in the wrong direction for many hours. When they had not come in and it became dark, Dad organized a search party. Around 1:00 a.m. they finally came out at White Kitchen restaurant near a very small town, 21 miles from home.

They drug their Christmas trees the entire distance. The boys and the trees showed considerable wear from the ordeal.

Dad referred to Don as Daniel Boone for some time afterward.

And this may explain Don’s lifelong interest in Daniel Boone.
